May 24 – Lunna Kirk

This historic church was a very short walk from our pod. Scroll down for some really good historical signage. Our pod is steps away from the first location in 1940 of the “Shetland Bus” (so-called by Churchill) boats to Norway to rescue civilians and delivery money and weapons. The operation was moved to Scalloway in 1942. Lunna House was the headquarters for the operation.

Lunna Kirk is the oldest active kirk in Shetland..

What is that up there? It’s the laird’s observation post, Hunters Point, so he could make sure his tenants were not selling their fish to others. What a dick, right?

The Laird’s wife, who died quite young. Probably in childbirth.

The holes in the exterior were supposedly so the local lepers could observe church services. That hasn’t been absolutely verified, but OK makes sense to me.
