June 23 – Camden Town, Graffiti Tunnel

My friends John and Louise (who took me to Cricket at the start of my trip) live in Camden Town, and offered to take us on a walking tour. David declined, but I definitely wanted to explore with seasoned inhabitants! We were to meet up with David for lunch later.

The built-out 3D facades on the buildings are an architectural feature I wasn’t expecting! Apparently, Camdentown is famous for them.

We strolled through Camden Market in an obligatory way. Apparently, the current owners have many rules about exact specifications for the storefronts. Apparently it used to be much more free-wheeling and creative. Now a uniform look is not just suggested, but required.

Amy Winehouse was a famous Camdentown denizen.
Un-gentrified part of Camden Market. Where the horses were boarded.
Dylan Thomas lived here. And probably hated it.
The artist Walter Sickert lived here.
Old Black Cat cigarette factory.
A music venue for many years, still is!
Baudelaire and Verlaine lived here in a riotous fashion.
Thomas Hardy did this. So they say.

Another surprise location! Graffiti Tunnel! AKA the Leake Street Arches. I loved all the massive and teeny-tiny art!

We emerged to a brilliant blue day!
